beautiful non-breakable outdoor dishware
i love non-breakable melamine and bamboo dishes, not only because we have kids, but because it’s just so much less stressful to not worry about clumsy (nameless) relatives breaking your stuff either!
it’s so nice to be able to transport our dinners outside easily without worrying about anything breaking and it’s always lightweight too!
i rounded up a bunch of beautiful and outdoor safe dinnerware, serving platters and acrylic drinking cups for all your summer meals al fresco!

sheet pan chicken thighs with sweet potato and cauliflower hash
this is one of my go-to easy weeknight dinners forever now, and somehow i’ve never totally shared it here! it’s not fancy, it’s really not even elaborate whatsoever and yet it’s one of the easiest comfort dinners i have on rotation and i love that it’s just so simple to make and such an easy clean up.
i’ve tried making both elements separate from each other and it’s fine, but the juices of the chicken thighs and the veggies together just work so well and make this so flavorful!
you can also obviously change up the vegetables, but the combo of the sweet potato and the cauliflower is just perfect to me. i can eat pounds of the stuff (and i have).
the recipe is not exact amounts, it’s a very loose recipe. i’ve been winging it for years and you just have to use the amount that looks right to you! don’t crowd the veggies on the sheet pan, but you’ll want to fit as much on there as you can!
sheet pan chicken thighs with cauliflower and sweet potato hash
one of the easiest weeknight dinners ever?! and so flavorful. it's been on rotation for years in our house!Ingredients
- 4-6 bone-in skin-on chicken thighs
- 1-2 sweet potato
- 1 head of cauliflower (or two small bags)
- 1/2 cup olive oil (or more)
- coarse kosher salt
- fresh cracked pepper
- herbs de provence
- anchovy paste (optional) *
- butter (optional) *
Instructions
- preheat your oven to 450℉
- dry off your chicken thighs well, and lay onto your sheet pan. peel sweet potato and dice into small pieces (i like them crunchy and small but you can keep them big!) slice up your cauliflower into small pieces.
- lay everything onto your sheet pan together, making sure it isn't too crowded.
- pour olive oil on top of everything, you can use a bowl to get everything nice and tossed but that defeats the no dishes rule for me. season everything liberally with salt, fresh cracked pepper and herbs de provence. you want to make sure everything is nice and saturated!
- cook in oven for about 35 minutes and rotate half way through, i also like to flip the veggies over with a spatula to get them evenly cooked.
- check the temperature of your chicken and remove the thighs if they're at the right temp and the skin is crispy enough for your liking. you can let the vegetables continue cooking while the chicken rests if they need it.
- * OPTIONAL STEP – for even more flavorful chicken skin, i've started mixing together equal parts butter and anchovy paste, then brushing that on top as well! it makes the skin extra golden but i know some people are grossed out by anchovy!
i hope you enjoy our dinner! please let me know if you make it, would love to know other people add it to their own weeknight rotation!

father’s day fill-in-the-blank printable
i always love a fill-in-the-blank for my son to fill out – and i thought a father’s day one could be so fun and sweet. no matter what age your kids are, whether they can write themselves or not, these are always cute. i did simple prompts that can be totally sappy or totally silly (probably depending on your kids ages).
and yes before you ask – i will repurpose this for mother’s day as well! promise!
when to use this printable
if you’re looking for a sentimental way to show your dads or spouses you care on father’s day gift – this would be a perfect little addition to whatever you’re gifting them or just something sweet all on it’s own.
i like a fill-in-the-blank versus a typical father’s day card, because the prompts encourage a little more creativity and tapping into what they love about their dad rather than just writing “i love you daddy” etc!
ps if you’re looking for a good father’s day gift idea – here’s the link for this years gift guide.
how to print
click below to access the printable in a new browser window. for best results, do not print directly from the browser window!
right click to save to your computer directly, then open the file from your finder and print from there.
i designed this to be standard paper size 8.5×11″, but you could also print it smaller and cut it out if you want it to be a little less large! just choose to print at a smaller scale (less than 100%) and cut out to your liking.
i like to print my more special things on cardstock, which is thicker than standard copy paper, but you can print on any paper you’d like.

skirt steak with lemon couscous salad
i’ve got another simple dinner recipe for you to add to your weekly rotation! this skirt steak with a lemony couscous and cucumber salad is easy enough to make on a weeknight for your kids, but special enough to enjoy on the weekend too. this is not my original recipe, but i modified it a bit and i loved it so much i thought you needed it in your life too!
i love that skirt steak is usually less expensive than most steak (i mean is anything inexpensive these days though?) but the marinade gives it so much flavor. the original recipe calls for grilling the steak– but if you aren’t grilling, i cooked my steak on a cast iron pan and it was still so delicious!
i would definitely make this again on the grill, it’d be such a great summery dinner to eat outside. i would say it’s easy enough to make on a weeknight too (as long as you can take the time to marinate before it’s go time!)
i’ve actually been getting more into marinating recipes for weeknights because i love that i can prep it before picking arlo up from school and then have it ready to cook when i get home with him (which always takes muuuch longer than i anticipate).
another modification of the original recipe is i didn’t personally care for the couscous salad as much when it was cold, i thought it tasted way better when i made it at warm or at room temperature, so i want you to know that you can (and i guess technically are supposed to) refrigerate the salad, so if you want cold couscous you do you. but me?! i like it warmmmm 🙂
skirt steak with lemon herby couscous salad
you can grill or pan sear your steak, but this is such an easy way to make your skirt steak so flavorful!recipe adapted from the wandering chickpea(and her photos are so much lovelier than mine!)Ingredients
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice, plus more for serving
- 1 tbsp honey
- 4 garlic cloves minced
- 1 1/2 tsp dijon mustard
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 3/4 tsp kosher salt
- freshly ground black pepper
- 1 1/2 lbs skirt steak
- flaky sea salt
Lemon herby couscous salad
- 1 cup dry israeli couscous (pearled)
- 1 cucumber chopped
- 2 scallions chopped
- 1/4 cup fresh dill finely chopped
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley finely chopped
- 1/8 cup fresh mint finely chopped
- 1/4 cup crumbled feta (optional)
Instructions
- whisk together the olive oil, lemon juice, honey, garlic, dijon mustard, oregano, salt and black pepper. place the skirt steak in a shallow dish and pour over half the marinade, turning the pieces so they are fully coated. cover with plastic wrap and marinate for 30-45 minutes at room temperature or up to 2 hours in the fridge. allow the steak to come to room temperature before cooking.
- while the steak marinates, cook the couscous according to the package instructions. drain the couscous into a colander, rinse under cold water to cool, let drain, and pat dry. toss with the remaining marinade, cucumber, scallions, dill, parsley, mint, (and feta if using). season with salt and pepper to taste.
- preheat the grill to medium-high heat (about 450°-500° F) or get your cast iron pan nice and hot on high heat. cook the steak for 3-4 minutes per side or until cooked to your liking. let rest for 10 minutes before slicing against the grain. sprinkle with flaky sea salt and serve with a generous squeeze of fresh lemon juice.
Notes
we aren’t much of a cheese family, so i didn’t use feta! but feta or a non-dairy alternative would be great here if you’re into that kind of thing. the original recipe calls for refrigerating the couscous salad but i really preferred it at room temp! totally up to you.next time i will make it herbier, i love an herby minty salad with mediterranean food, so i’ll definitely make it more like hers in the pictures haha – but i loved it and i hope you love it too!

really cute wall art for a kids room and nursery
if you’re shopping for wall art to hang in your kids room, it can be either a very fun or very annoying task, depending on your personality (i am one of those people who will find something they love, but then continue to look for weeks, deliberate endlessly, until i usually just end up getting the first one i loved. my fun process!)
i curated a big list of beautiful kids art so that you don’t have to follow in my footsteps! i included lots of art pieces that feel both fun and whimsy for children, but also elevated enough that they could go almost anywhere in your house. i even found some cute modern sports themed art for you sports loving parents and kids.
where i shop for kids wall art
- etsy — you can find such a giant range of pieces here, plus lots of digital downloads that don’t cost a lot
- minted — lots of options too including some cute personalized ones
- artfully walls — a great site for a bit more elevated and artistic pieces! and lots of beautiful frame options
- society6 — affordable art from lots of different artists.
- maisonette — just cute kids stuff in general
- mixtiles — affordable art that requires no hanging! these just stick right to the wall.
tips for picking out kids wall art
make it feel like them (for the bigger kids)
you want their room to feel like their room! think about how to reflect their interests and include that throughout their space. you can get your kid involved in the process if they’re old enough.
here are some ideas to get you started:
- interests (do they like a specific animal? elephants? trains?)
- favorite colors
- hobbies or sports
- favorite stories or characters
- favorite foods
from there you can put your own “spin” on the subject to make it feel more artistic or sophisticated — because you should love the space too!
consider the rest of the room
is their room painted a certain color? do you have lots of pattern? try to coordinate the art you choose with what’s happening throughout the room so it feels cohesive.
let the art grow with them
keep in mind that you (and they) might want to switch out the art as your kid grows, so you might not need to put pressure on yourself to find perfect “forever” art. part of the fun with this is watching how your kid’s space evolves with them and how their art reflects their changing interests over time.
with those tips in mind, i rounded up lots of art pieces that feel fun for kids — and hopefully for you too!

frames for kids wall art
some of these pieces come with framing options, but since lots of options these days are offered as digital downloads, i thought it’d be helpful to share some frames for your new art.
where to get kids wall art printed (and framed)
if you’re downloading prints you’re might want to get them professionally printed as well, here are some options i recommend!
- framebridge – incredibly easy and really amazing quality.
- simply framed – i’ve never used them before and can’t speak for the craftsmanship, but you can also print and frame together.
- artifact uprising – really high quality framing and printing, prices can be high but they do sales pretty often!
- mixtiles – mixtiles are a super unique style, they’re printed without any glass and can stick right to the wall without nails. obviously that makes them really easy to hang and reposition, but i did find it annoying to try to move one later on without having their proprietary sticky back.
i hope this post helped if you’re looking for beautiful art to hang in your child’s room!
and if your nursery or kid’s room has a theme and you’re looking for art you didn’t find here let me know! i love a good challenge.

a diy outdoor mud kitchen makeover
as a first time mom, i did lots of fun projects for arlo – a playhouse, a dollhouse, a play kitchen… so i thought it was time to do something for izzy! she loves playing with the kitchen and she loves getting wet, so i thought a mud kitchen for our backyard would be super fun.
i assembled the entire mud kitchen myself, which wasn’t the easiest thing i’ve ever done, but it was totally doable if you want to do it yourself. i used a drill, which made it much quicker.i loved the muted colors of this mud kitchen when i was shopping online, but once i assembled it i noticed that the blue sink felt a little too blue for this beige mom lol. so i checked the garage and just happened to have some brand new spray paint and spray plastic primer from a project i never ended up doing and decided it was a sign to go for it.
i spray painted the sink and then the water jug thing also felt too blue, so that got some beige spray paint as well.
i thought some little cafe curtains would make the kitchen look so good, so i did some new sew gingham curtains with fusing tape and i love them so much. we just drilled holes on either side and used a wooden dowel i had laying around.
for the accessories, i used a stainless steel toy cookware set, some bamboo plates from our kitchen and some utensils from our kitchen and from the play kitchen.
and i spent a lovely afternoon outside painting rocks to look like food! i just used acrylic paint, and they turned out so cute. i got nervous as i was painting them about how heavy they are and handing a toddler a basket of rocks to play with haha — but hoping no one gets concussed too badly.
izzy is 19m now so we’ll see how she does with them, but the rocks would probably be safest for kids 3 and up!
i mean how could i resist having cute food to play with in here?!the good news is she loves the kitchen!
the mud kitchen is meant to get dirty (hence the name), but we’ll probably still tuck it away somewhere safe when it rains. in terms of keeping it clean and in good condition, if you live somewhere with winter, i’d probably get a cover for it. i think a grill cover would work well if you check the measurements!

cute outdoor toys and activities for kids
whenever we go to other people’s houses, i keep noticing how much more fun arlo has in his friend’s backyards than our own haha. a lot of that is probably because it’s someone else’s house, but i have sort of wished we had more fun stuff to do back there.
we had our playhouse and an ugly water table, some bubbles and we’ve put our cars back there as well, but i’ve just always wished we had a pretty swing set thing.
finding stylish backyard jungle gyms and fun play things for kids is as challenging as you’d think, but i did my best! i rounded up a tonnn of fun things below!!

how to organize and store your kid’s legos
if you’re a lego parent, you’re probably also drowning in legos!! it’s an endless unbeatable battle to stay organized when it comes to the most challenging toy in existence to organize.
when you search the internet for lego organizing tips, there are endless posts because there really is no great, perfect way to organize them. once your kids get INTO lego, they basically just take over their room or your playroom or your whole entire house and you need to actively stay on top of it in order to keep them organized. i speak from experience, as my childs legos have taken over his room and i have also googled how to organize legos many, many times!
deciding how to best organize them all and figuring out where to put them can be really overwhelming, so i thought a big post with lots of ideas and inspiration could be helpful for fellow lego parents!
how to organize your kid’s legos
step 1: understand your kid’s play style
when thinking about organizing legos, consider how your kid plays with them. do they like to build sets according to the instructions only? do they like to keep their sets together or break them up and rebuild? or are they more into free play and coming up with their own creations? or all of the above!!
step 2: go through allllll the legos
it’s scary, i know. but the first thing you gotta do is start dumping everything out and taking inventory of what you have.
if there are any sets they’ve outgrown, don’t play with anymore, or that are missing tons of pieces, consider donating them or breaking them up into legos to sort. really try to pare their collection down as much as possible and get a sense of what types of legos your kid has and really loves. btw — you can also order replacement bricks for your sets on lego’s website.
we have an embarrassing amount of half built sets that arlo wanted to keep intact, but then they got destroyed while playing and we didn’t fully disassemble so it basically just looks like a lego city apocalypse in his closet.
if you don’t own many brick separator tools, you can buy them a la carte (they save your fingers!) and maybe even invest in a lego vacuum (i want one!!)
step 3: come up with your system
we’ve had to devote a lot of space in our sons room to his legos. half of his desk drawers are for lego pieces and a few shelves in his closet store the sets stored away. the more sets he acquires over time and the less sets he’s willing to donate, the more crazy it will inevitably get… but back to how to organize!
once you’ve figured out how your kid likes to play and what they have, organize based on that. and include your kid in the process!
if they like to exclusively go by instructions/set, i recommend organizing their legos by the original sets with the manuals inside.
these bags below are really nice and sturdy, and i like that i can fit multiple into a box that i then tuck into the closet, but i don’t love that i can’t see inside that well and they don’t have a separate slot for the instruction manuals. i do love that they’re deep and you don’t risk the pieces going everywhere unless the bag topples over.
these bags are nice because they have handles, a slot for the instructions and you can see inside, but they’re not deep and the loose legos can easily spill everywhere — i don’t know about you but i’ve spent mannnnyyy hours of my life trying to find one missing piece during a build mid tantrum and i definitely prefer NOT to lose pieces lol.
if your kid likes to build more freely and doesn’t care as much about sets, you may want to think about organizing your legos by categories only and not worry about disassembling and storing sets when they’re done. some examples are:
- color
- brick type/size
- figures/minifigures
- special or unique pieces (trains, plants, animals, cars, food etc.)
if your kid likes both kinds of building approaches, you might want to figure out some particularly loved sets to keep together and then have a separate area of legos for them to build whatever they want. you could organize this area too or just have a big fun area of legos for them to go crazy with.
it might also be a good idea to separate out any special or expensive/rare sets. you can put these on display throughout their room and then it doubles as decor for them. and you can rotate the displays out to keep it fun and encourage them to keep building.
lastly, consider if you will realistically keep up with your system. for example, maybe don’t organize by type if you think you/your kid won’t stay on top of it. or you might end up not sorting the legos at all and that’s totally fine, too.
we naively organized by type for 2 days to have it end up in shambles with no real order now. many people warned us, but we didn’t listen and it has NOT stayed tidy. the most important thing for our drawer “system” was to have a place to put everything back and encourage free building. despite the lack of organization, arlo manages to build freely just fine.
what we have to do (but don’t actually do, yet) is just re-organize every 6 months or so to stay on top of it, but life gets in the way of these things!
how to store your kid’s legos
once you’ve figured out how to divide up your kid’s legos, think about how you want to store them. clear storage bins can be useful to see what’s inside and can look cool if you’re choosing a more monochromatic system like color. but if you think seeing all the legos inside will drive you nuts (guilty) you’ll definitely want to opt for closed storage.
some ideas of ways to store organized legos:
- standalone storage cabinets
- in their closet
- under the bed
- a repurposed trundle bed
- on the wall / on wall shelves (great if you don’t have a lot of floor space)
how we have our lego setup
we have two trofast units from ikea and had a desktop built on top (with a small backsplash to ensure no lego pieces fall behind). on the left side, we have 9 drawers devoted to lego pieces.
on the desktop, i keep a tray that has handles and tall sides for him to build on. (we actually keep a few extra trays in his closet for when he’s working on multiple things, but we try not to let him do that much these days because that’s how things get out of control)
i also got him a little “outbox” — it’s a place where we can put whatever pieces he’s left out away but so they’re still nearby and accessible versus putting back in the drawers. these are the bins we use, ours are just a different size.
the lowest shelf is where he can display finished builds, but his closet currently has a ton we need to repair or disassemble too (planning on it to be a big summer project)
and here are a few examples of how other people stored their kids collections too …
