a diy outdoor mud kitchen makeover

as a first time mom, i did lots of fun projects for arlo – a playhouse, a dollhouse, a play kitchen… so i thought it was time to do something for izzy! she loves playing with the kitchen and she loves getting wet, so i thought a mud kitchen for our backyard would be super fun.

i assembled the entire mud kitchen myself, which wasn’t the easiest thing i’ve ever done, but it was totally doable if you want to do it yourself. i used a drill, which made it much quicker.

i loved the muted colors of this mud kitchen when i was shopping online, but once i assembled it i noticed that the blue sink felt a little too blue for this beige mom lol. so i checked the garage and just happened to have some brand new spray paint and spray plastic primer from a project i never ended up doing and decided it was a sign to go for it.

i spray painted the sink and then the water jug thing also felt too blue, so that got some beige spray paint as well.

i thought some little cafe curtains would make the kitchen look so good, so i did some new sew gingham curtains with fusing tape and i love them so much. we just drilled holes on either side and used a wooden dowel i had laying around.

for the accessories, i used a stainless steel toy cookware set, some bamboo plates from our kitchen and some utensils from our kitchen and from the play kitchen.

and i spent a lovely afternoon outside painting rocks to look like food! i just used acrylic paint, and they turned out so cute. i got nervous as i was painting them about how heavy they are and handing a toddler a basket of rocks to play with haha — but hoping no one gets concussed too badly.

izzy is 19m now so we’ll see how she does with them, but the rocks would probably be safest for kids 3 and up!

i mean how could i resist having cute food to play with in here?!

the good news is she loves the kitchen!

the mud kitchen is meant to get dirty (hence the name), but we’ll probably still tuck it away somewhere safe when it rains. in terms of keeping it clean and in good condition, if you live somewhere with winter, i’d probably get a cover for it. i think a grill cover would work well if you check the measurements!

cute outdoor toys and activities for kids

whenever we go to other people’s houses, i keep noticing how much more fun arlo has in his friend’s backyards than our own haha. a lot of that is probably because it’s someone else’s house, but i have sort of wished we had more fun stuff to do back there.

we had our playhouse and an ugly water table, some bubbles and we’ve put our cars back there as well, but i’ve just always wished we had a pretty swing set thing.

how to organize and store your kid’s legos

if you’re a lego parent, you’re probably also drowning in legos!! it’s an endless unbeatable battle to stay organized when it comes to the most challenging toy in existence to organize.

when you search the internet for lego organizing tips, there are endless posts because there really is no great, perfect way to organize them. once your kids get INTO lego, they basically just take over their room or your playroom or your whole entire house and you need to actively stay on top of it in order to keep them organized. i speak from experience, as my childs legos have taken over his room and i have also googled how to organize legos many, many times!

deciding how to best organize them all and figuring out where to put them can be really overwhelming, so i thought a big post with lots of ideas and inspiration could be helpful for fellow lego parents!

how to organize your kid’s legos

step 1: understand your kid’s play style

when thinking about organizing legos, consider how your kid plays with them. do they like to build sets according to the instructions only? do they like to keep their sets together or break them up and rebuild? or are they more into free play and coming up with their own creations? or all of the above!!

step 2: go through allllll the legos

it’s scary, i know. but the first thing you gotta do is start dumping everything out and taking inventory of what you have.

if there are any sets they’ve outgrown, don’t play with anymore, or that are missing tons of pieces, consider donating them or breaking them up into legos to sort. really try to pare their collection down as much as possible and get a sense of what types of legos your kid has and really loves. btw — you can also order replacement bricks for your sets on lego’s website.

we have an embarrassing amount of half built sets that arlo wanted to keep intact, but then they got destroyed while playing and we didn’t fully disassemble so it basically just looks like a lego city apocalypse in his closet.

if you don’t own many brick separator tools, you can buy them a la carte (they save your fingers!) and maybe even invest in a lego vacuum (i want one!!)

step 3: come up with your system

we’ve had to devote a lot of space in our sons room to his legos. half of his desk drawers are for lego pieces and a few shelves in his closet store the sets stored away. the more sets he acquires over time and the less sets he’s willing to donate, the more crazy it will inevitably get… but back to how to organize!

once you’ve figured out how your kid likes to play and what they have, organize based on that. and include your kid in the process!

if they like to exclusively go by instructions/set, i recommend organizing their legos by the original sets with the manuals inside.

these bags below are really nice and sturdy, and i like that i can fit multiple into a box that i then tuck into the closet, but i don’t love that i can’t see inside that well and they don’t have a separate slot for the instruction manuals. i do love that they’re deep and you don’t risk the pieces going everywhere unless the bag topples over.

these bags are nice because they have handles, a slot for the instructions and you can see inside, but they’re not deep and the loose legos can easily spill everywhere — i don’t know about you but i’ve spent mannnnyyy hours of my life trying to find one missing piece during a build mid tantrum and i definitely prefer NOT to lose pieces lol.

if your kid likes to build more freely and doesn’t care as much about sets, you may want to think about organizing your legos by categories only and not worry about disassembling and storing sets when they’re done. some examples are:

    • color
    • brick type/size
    • figures/minifigures
    • special or unique pieces (trains, plants, animals, cars, food etc.)

if your kid likes both kinds of building approaches, you might want to figure out some particularly loved sets to keep together and then have a separate area of legos for them to build whatever they want. you could organize this area too or just have a big fun area of legos for them to go crazy with.

it might also be a good idea to separate out any special or expensive/rare sets. you can put these on display throughout their room and then it doubles as decor for them. and you can rotate the displays out to keep it fun and encourage them to keep building.

lastly, consider if you will realistically keep up with your system. for example, maybe don’t organize by type if you think you/your kid won’t stay on top of it. or you might end up not sorting the legos at all and that’s totally fine, too.

we naively organized by type for 2 days to have it end up in shambles with no real order now. many people warned us, but we didn’t listen and it has NOT stayed tidy. the most important thing for our drawer “system” was to have a place to put everything back and encourage free building. despite the lack of organization, arlo manages to build freely just fine.

what we have to do (but don’t actually do, yet) is just re-organize every 6 months or so to stay on top of it, but life gets in the way of these things!

how to store your kid’s legos

once you’ve figured out how to divide up your kid’s legos, think about how you want to store them. clear storage bins can be useful to see what’s inside and can look cool if you’re choosing a more monochromatic system like color. but if you think seeing all the legos inside will drive you nuts (guilty) you’ll definitely want to opt for closed storage.

some ideas of ways to store organized legos:

    • standalone storage cabinets
    • in their closet
    • under the bed
    • a repurposed trundle bed
    • on the wall / on wall shelves (great if you don’t have a lot of floor space)

how we have our lego setup

we have two trofast units from ikea and had a desktop built on top (with a small backsplash to ensure no lego pieces fall behind). on the left side, we have 9 drawers devoted to lego pieces.

on the desktop, i keep a tray that has handles and tall sides for him to build on. (we actually keep a few extra trays in his closet for when he’s working on multiple things, but we try not to let him do that much these days because that’s how things get out of control)

i also got him a little “outbox” — it’s a place where we can put whatever pieces he’s left out away but so they’re still nearby and accessible versus putting back in the drawers. these are the bins we use, ours are just a different size.

the lowest shelf is where he can display finished builds, but his closet currently has a ton we need to repair or disassemble too (planning on it to be a big summer project)

and here are a few examples of how other people stored their kids collections too …

    caitlin marie design

these are sets that are put back into bags and then stored in drawers. such a tidy organized way to do it (but not much room for free building later). definitely type A organizing right there!

bigger than the three of us

a really beautiful example of closed storage, you would never even know these stores legos inside!!

    neat little nest

this one organizes legos by categories and then has a separate area organized by color and people and then an additional area just for storing instruction books.

    designbycilla

a nice example of a painted storage cabinet and very cute lego-themed shelves.

    within the grove

clear bins with labels organized on wall shelves.

    organisingmum

lazy susan/turntables can be really useful for both storing and building!

    livlet studio

okay so hopefully you feel inspired now! and to help you get started, i rounded up lots of good looking lego storage options for you below.

    faux flowers that look real

if you know me you know i like faux – they last forever and sometimes they can look incredibly convincing! i love fresh flowers but i’m too frugal to buy them regularly but i love to have flowers around the house so faux is win win!

if you don’t have the budget to regularly buy flowers, faux flowers are now a really good substitute. the faux flowers nowadays are not your mamas faux flowers. well i don’t really know actually. i’m just assuming, but i didn’t actually buy faux flowers when i was a baby.

anyway, we gathered up a lot of gorgeous faux flowers that look convincingly real, and i sort of want ALL OF THEM.

someday i’ll have the energy and budget to buy them all to compare for you, but for now we went off the ones i have along with others with good customer reviews

    Real Touch Hydrangea in White

    more beautiful hydrangea

    etsy

    Faux Anemone White Stem

pretty faux anemones seem rare but these look so good and are one of my favorite all time flowers

what to look for in faux flowers

    color

the best faux flowers have different shades like fresh flowers do.

    variation

real flowers are imperfect and your faux ones should be too. look for a mix of blooms and buds.

    realistic stems

if they look super plastic-y from far away, it’s a dead giveaway that they’re fake.

    materials

search for silk or “real-touch” flowers and make sure they have wired stems so you can bend them to look more realistic.

how to make faux flowers look better

when you first get them, faux flowers always look a little scary and sometimes, quite UGLY.

to make them look more natural, i always curve the stems and fluff out the petals. kind of like you’re fluffing out your hair.

you’ll also probably have to bend or cut the stems to get them to fit nicely in a vase, and sometimes i remove excess leaves just to tidy them up and fit them in the vase a little better. also i usually wrap up the stems with a rubber band to make it easier for bundling. and if you’re putting them in a clear vase, add water!

you can kind of see how i do all this in my video here

cute kids beds for every budget

since updating arlos room, i’ve been getting a lot of questions asking about what bed i would have chosen had i not gone with bunkbeds. so we rounded up tons of beds that can grow with your kids, and of every type! twin and full size, bunk beds, loft beds, trundle beds — so many cute beds for every budget.

we skipped the toddler beds in this post, because personally, i don’t think they’re worth the investment unless you’re very low on space since they grow out of them really quickly. so, sorry if you’re looking for toddler beds here! i recommend you do a twin instead! 🙂

click on the section you want to jump to

standard twin and full size beds

most of these comes in both twin and full size options and additional colors. we tried to find a bunch of different styles and even found an aesthetic car bed, who knew that was possible!?

a trundle is great for sleepovers or house guests and can also be repurposed as additional storage or play space if you don’t need the extra bed.

arlo’s bunkbed came with a trundle we haven’t assembled yet that we’ll be using for extra play space.

    daybeds

day beds are really useful as kids and toddlers beds because they can also double as a sofa/seating situation when in need!

what i also really like about them is that they have three sides, so if you’re trying to transition your child out of their crib, you can actually turn the daybed around the opposite way at first so it feels like they’re still safe in a crib. we did that for arlo and he found it to be very cozy!

    bunk beds

arlo has always wanted bunkbeds despite not having siblings, but kids just seem to find bunkbeds magical! bunkbeds are obviously ideal if you have two children who share a room and are limited on space versus having two small beds in one room — plus they’re fun!

almost all of these bunk beds are twin over twin size, but we decided to opt for a twin over full. we sit in his bed a lot so i wanted some extra space and to be able to lay there without hitting my head (i still hit my head) and what’s really nice about having the larger bed on bottom is that we can stand on it while arlo’s on the top bunk.

    loft beds

if you’re limited on space and your kid wants to sleep up high, a loft bed is a great option because you gain so much floor space by raising up their bed. underneath, you can setup a desk for them to do homework or you can use it as an extra play area.

honestly, if i had known arlo would have liked sleeping on top so much, i’d have maybe considered a loft bed instead but i’m sort of glad to have the extra bed!

    arlo’s big boy room

arlo’s room is finally done and i’m soooo happy with how it turned out! i’ve sort of neglected his room ever since we first started making changes from his initial nursery and i felt pangs of guilt when he was so excited about izzy’s nursery and said he wished his room was “painted a color” and “tidy like izzys”!

so in my newfound quest to redo my house forever and ever, i decided that arlo’s room was absolutely the most dire. it was just basically a blank slate that lacked adequate storage for the amount of stuff he has and all it looked like was clutter to me. when we would hang out in there and i would look around i basically just felt anxious and stressed and that’s not the feeling you want to have in your kids room right?

    first, paint!

so it started with painting EVERYTHING. i wanted to color drench his room in a mix between green and blue because i didn’t want a paint that felt too green and i didn’t want one that felt too blue so i think this color ended up being the perfect in between. it’s a north facing room that gets very little light, so i opted to go lighter than i originally planned. in hindsight now i sort of wish i went a bit darker, for that cozy vibe, but i’m happy with it.

the color is called gray wisp by benjamin moore.

    his dream of bunkbeds

arlo begged for bunkbeds for years now, i really can’t explain why! a few of his friends have them so i think it was this novelty that he thought seemed so cool, to be able to choose which bed to sleep in? lol. i really tried to convince him to do a bed with a trundle instead because the room isn’t exactly tall or large and i was worried bunkbeds wouldn’t work in here but he wasn’t having it. bunkbeds seemed to be the #1 priority for him.

i automatically assumed he’d sleep on the bottom bunk and kind of liked the idea that we would finally have additional space for the giant oversized shark stuffies he awkardly slept with, so he could sleep on the bottom and they could sleep on the top. but i was wrong, the first few nights he slept on bottom and then excitedly moved to the top. now he’ll do bottom once in a while but mostly the top. i was worried about him rolling out but we’ve tucked him in under a tight duvet and top sheet and now i’m less worried about it.

had i known that he’d love sleeping on the top bunk, i actually would have loved to get him a loft bed for some extra play space, but it’s nice to have the spare bed just in case for guests. and since writing this, he’s already had his first sleepover!!

also in regards to the full size below the twin size, again i debated this choice a lot – i really like the streamlined look of a twin over twin bunkbed, but i know how much time we’ve spent laying on his bed and i was scared to give that up and felt like a full size bottom bunk would give us the option to lounge with him easier. i’m really glad i did, now i can’t imagine a twin on the bottom!

the canopy was an easy inexpensive solution to his request for curtains surrounding his bunkbed. at first i liked the idea and started brainstorming DIY ideas, but then quickly decided against it – especially because of the full/twin situation. but i do love curtains around a bunkbed, so i decided a canopy would suffice! (i think it’s actually the reason he sleeps on the top bunk because he loves to be all cozy inside it). i wasn’t sure if it would look too young or feminine but the moment we hung it up, it instantly transformed the bunkbeds! it adds such a whimsical vibe and i just love it so much more than i expected!

    the lounge area

another choice i’m super happy with is his little lounge corner. i wasn’t sure what i wanted to put in the corner and realized a nugget couch was the best choice for us — he loves playing with them but i never thought we had the space in our house for one, but again we’ve spent so much time laying on his bed i was worried about having seating and i’m so glad i brought in extra! it’s so nice for all of us to have a place to sit and hang out and watch the kids dance and izzy loves it because it’s her size.

i still might get him some fun pillows later, but i was spending so much on the room i tried to use some stuff i already had like these *boring* but soft throw pillows.

i added the little side table we’ve had for years and a fun sticky dartboard to really commit to the lounge concept, and this is where arlo says he’ll “serve drinks” haha

    the wall shelving

you might remember arlo originally said he wanted a RED ROOM. well that was not going to be possible for me, but instead i decided to incorporate pops of red throughout the room and i’m shockingly pleased with it! i’m a beige mom (in recovery) so the moment i saw the red spray paint hit the brackets i got reaaaally nervous, but i love the way it looks with the wall color.

and arlo has very timely taste because pops of red are all the rage now.

i knew i wanted to paint the shelves and the trofast desk in the same paint color and i knew i wanted red brackets, but the ones i found and liked were $20 a pop so i decided to DIY it with some brackets from the hardware store (technically hung upside down to most people?) and some candy red spray paint.

i got the supplies to do four shelves but panicked that it would be too many when he hung three — i went back and forth a lot that day but i’m really glad we went four. three may have looked empirically better, but i feel like four makes more of a bold, fun statement. and he has SO MUCH stuff that it would be a shame to have skipped that final shelf. i also like that it kind of plays off the height of the bunkbed – everything goes high in this room now!

i was sad to say goodbye to the circle shelf, but it’s so nice to have the entire width of the wall now because we needed it so badly! these shelves will obviously look cluttered and crazy very soon with all of arlo’s legos, but i’m just happy that we’ll have a pretty background for the clutter now.

i love that the shelves feel like they tell a story of who he is and everything he loves and has loved over the years.

    the trofast desk

last year, i had a carpenter build a tabletop for two ikea trofast cabinets for his room and it’s been so helpful for all his toys and legos, and to have a workspace for arlo to build or draw. i had him make a small backsplash because i knew legos would always be falling behind otherwise. he used metal brackets on the undersides of the desk gap to attach to the trofast units, and i should probably do a separate post just on the construction of it!

it looked nice raw wood, but i am SO happy i painted it because i like it so much more now. the paint has already chipped on the tabletop, and the hardware store employees told me there wasn’t much i could do in terms of non toxic, non super shiny protection layers, so for now i have an long old leather table runner i found in the garage on top to protect it.

he’s 6.5 now so at some point he’ll be outgrowing the desk, but if we still want to keep it maybe we could put risers on the bottom to increase the height. for now he fits there fine and loves to sit at his desk.

    the other stuff

i made so many changes to the room that i got a little carried away and obsessed. to be honest i’m a little sad the room is finished! but relieved, also very relieved.

    • i swapped his very old rug with a nice new soft one we all love to sit on.
    • i also swapped out the glass pendant light because i realized it was inches away from the top bunk.
    • i kept his cellular blackout shades but i decided to cover them with linen roman shades.
    • i blew up one of our favorite arlo drawings and framed it (used an old frame we had laying around and painted it this totally fun, non-beige mom color!)
    • i subtly incorporated his love of mario with a mushroom lamp and this cool question box wall art.
    • i hung magnet strips so that we could do a rotating art gallery of his latest drawings.
    • i got the most fun lego light switch plate covers.

phew! i worked so hard on this room, and luckily it makes both of us so happy!

now some dramatic before and afters, i opted not to clean up for the before photos because this is how it typically looked lol don’t judge me

    shop the room :

wall paint / bunkbeds / canopy / rug / rice paper shade / nightstand / digital clock / mushroom lamp / wall shelves / wall brackets / red spray paint / inspiration brackets / green chair / modular couch / dart board / wall lamps / roman shades / closet curtains / lego switch plates / magnetic art strips / bookshelf / blue duvet / striped sheets / throw blankets / mario wall art
