glazed donut cupcakes
the recipe i used calls these muffins – i only had so much batter and wanted to make a larger batch (for a picnic – not for me! don’t judge.), so i made them smaller and they turned into cupcakes. true story.
glazed donut muffins
(via cooking classy)yields : about 18 cupcakes or 12 mondo sized “muffins”
ingredients
3 cups flour
2 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
3/4 tsp salt
1 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup + 2 tb buttermilk
10 tb butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract… and for the glaze
1 1/2 cup powdered sugar
3 tbsp milk
1/2 tsp vanilla
(if you run out like i did, just whip up a little more. i also went heavy with the glaze, because well – i’m a fat ass.)directions
preheat the oven to 400 degrees. in a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. set aside.
in a separate bowl, whisk together milk and buttermilk. set aside.
in a large mixing bowl, blend together butter and sugar until well combined – about 30 seconds. mix in eggs one at a time. blend in vanilla.
using a wooden spoon to mix, add flour mixture in three separate batches, alternating with two additions of the milk, mixing just until combined after each addition – batter will be thick.
divide among lined muffin cups, if you want them huge – nearly fill them. if you want them cupcake sized, fill about 3/4. bake for 15 minutes (or a little more if your toothpick doesn’t come out clean)
transfer to a wire rack and allow to cool for about 10 minutes.
during the last few minutes of cooling, prepare the glaze by whisking together the ingredients. you might think it’s too thick, but it isn’t. i found out the hard way – i reglazed a couple of them after the fact.
dip each muffin in the glaze, while twirling and rotating to evenly coat the tops. lift and allow the excess to run off.
enjoy warm or allow to rest at room temperature for 10 minutes until the glaze has set. store in an airtight container.

diy schoolhouse ceiling fan
like i said a few weeks ago – we bought a simple ceiling fan that i wanted to DIY up somehow. while most people spray paint their ugly old ceiling fans white so they don’t stand out – i bought a white one and perhaps i uglied it right up. after doing this fan roundup, i was enamored with the retro schoolhouse fan.
i was freaking out during the whole process about ruining the fan – but now that it’s up, i’m happy with the look. i just don’t know if having your ceiling fan STAND OUT is a good thing.
SUPPLIES
ceiling fan (here’s the exact one i used)
wood grained contact paper
scissors
oil rubbed bronze spray paintINSTRUCTIONS
step one . cover each fan blade in contact paper. obviously you only have to worry about the side that’s visible. i’d love to say i figured out a way to do this perfectly – but frankly, it sucked. by the third blade, i basically cut out around the shape of the blade, and cut slits for every curve and then tucked them over. go from one end to the other slowly, using a ruler or a book to remove air bubbles. (i still had a lot of air bubbles but they seem to be pretty invisible now that the fan is up.
step two . tape off all the important stuff and spray paint all the hardware besides the light. as you can see, i taped off the entire top of the fan because it wouldn’t be visible and i didn’t want to break it.
step three. hopefully you can hire someone to install it.
see that? that’s my regulated body temperature.
also – i can’t decide if i like those weird triangular chain pulls that came with it or not.

glasses roundup
i’m in the market for new prescription glasses. i don’t wear them for much besides night driving, working, and watching tv – but my current ones are missing the arms and the lenses are all scratched up.
i ordered the five pairs from warby parker for at home try on – and as much as i like the company and the glasses in theory, none of them look good on me. actually they all look i drew glasses on my face. i’ve rounded up my favorites. the truth is – i think i just hate the way i look in glasses, but these all seem cute.

diy wrapped cords
i’m certainly not the first to wrap cords in other stuff (good ones here and here and here), but mostly i’ve seen DIYs done with extension cords. i personally don’t have a big extension cord problem in my house. i have a big white apple cord and camera cord and wacom tablet cord problem. specifically on my desk. so i decided i had WAY too many cords sitting around to not do anything about it.
but THEN – i was walking around aimlessly at home depot and saw that they started carrying the smaller version of the bungee rope i’ve always loved. i’ve been wanting to make something with the pretty bungee and now it came in convenient bracelet size. i was ready to go.
DIY WRAPPED CORDS
+ SUPPLIES
bare cords. duh.
bungee / twine / whatever
a needle
nylon thread
scissors
a lighter (for bungee ends)
lots of patience and good tv to watchi did this DIY with the intention of it being removable in case i didn’t like it or the cats didn’t like it even more. so far the cats have been fine. so have i. so instead of using hot glue like i was planning, i used a needle and thread to secure the ends and tied the rest super super tightly. the ends are not the most beautiful thing but who looks at ends!?
+ INSTRUCTIONS
step one . tie a small knot around the first end of your cord.
step two . sew the knot together a ton – if you’re using nylon thread, it’s practically invisible so don’t worry about how it looks. sew until it feels tight.
step three . sit there and wrap. do it really tightly and keep pushing towards the end you sewed.
step four . once you reach the end and have pushed the bungee or twine as far towards the other end as you can, keeping it all tight – tie a knot in the other end, cut and light with your lighter. sew to secure with your needle and thread.
i feel much better about my desk being cluttered with cords now.
