faux flowers that look real
if you know me you know i like faux – they last forever and sometimes they can look incredibly convincing! i love fresh flowers but i’m too frugal to buy them regularly but i love to have flowers around the house so faux is win win!
if you don’t have the budget to regularly buy flowers, faux flowers are now a really good substitute. the faux flowers nowadays are not your mamas faux flowers. well i don’t really know actually. i’m just assuming, but i didn’t actually buy faux flowers when i was a baby.
anyway, we gathered up a lot of gorgeous faux flowers that look convincingly real, and i sort of want ALL OF THEM.
someday i’ll have the energy and budget to buy them all to compare for you, but for now we went off the ones i have along with others with good customer reviews
afloral
Nantucket Blue Real Touch Hydrangea
been into blue hydrangea lately! these are so pretty and remind me of new england summers
etsy
Faux Anemone White Stem
pretty faux anemones seem rare but these look so good and are one of my favorite all time flowers
what to look for in faux flowers
color
the best faux flowers have different shades like fresh flowers do.
variation
real flowers are imperfect and your faux ones should be too. look for a mix of blooms and buds.
realistic stems
if they look super plastic-y from far away, it’s a dead giveaway that they’re fake.
materials
search for silk or “real-touch” flowers and make sure they have wired stems so you can bend them to look more realistic.
how to make faux flowers look better
when you first get them, faux flowers always look a little scary and sometimes, quite UGLY.
to make them look more natural, i always curve the stems and fluff out the petals. kind of like you’re fluffing out your hair.
you’ll also probably have to bend or cut the stems to get them to fit nicely in a vase, and sometimes i remove excess leaves just to tidy them up and fit them in the vase a little better. also i usually wrap up the stems with a rubber band to make it easier for bundling. and if you’re putting them in a clear vase, add water!
you can kind of see how i do all this in my video here

cute kids beds for every budget
since updating arlos room, i’ve been getting a lot of questions asking about what bed i would have chosen had i not gone with bunkbeds. so we rounded up tons of beds that can grow with your kids, and of every type! twin and full size, bunk beds, loft beds, trundle beds — so many cute beds for every budget.
we skipped the toddler beds in this post, because personally, i don’t think they’re worth the investment unless you’re very low on space since they grow out of them really quickly. so, sorry if you’re looking for toddler beds here! i recommend you do a twin instead! 🙂
click on the section you want to jump to
standard twin and full size beds
most of these comes in both twin and full size options and additional colors. we tried to find a bunch of different styles and even found an aesthetic car bed, who knew that was possible!?

trundle beds
a trundle is great for sleepovers or house guests and can also be repurposed as additional storage or play space if you don’t need the extra bed.
arlo’s bunkbed came with a trundle we haven’t assembled yet that we’ll be using for extra play space.

this one also comes in a really cute standard bed option.

Full / Double Platform Bed with Trundle
daybeds
day beds are really useful as kids and toddlers beds because they can also double as a sofa/seating situation when in need!
what i also really like about them is that they have three sides, so if you’re trying to transition your child out of their crib, you can actually turn the daybed around the opposite way at first so it feels like they’re still safe in a crib. we did that for arlo and he found it to be very cozy!

bunk beds
arlo has always wanted bunkbeds despite not having siblings, but kids just seem to find bunkbeds magical! bunkbeds are obviously ideal if you have two children who share a room and are limited on space versus having two small beds in one room — plus they’re fun!
almost all of these bunk beds are twin over twin size, but we decided to opt for a twin over full. we sit in his bed a lot so i wanted some extra space and to be able to lay there without hitting my head (i still hit my head) and what’s really nice about having the larger bed on bottom is that we can stand on it while arlo’s on the top bunk.

loft beds
if you’re limited on space and your kid wants to sleep up high, a loft bed is a great option because you gain so much floor space by raising up their bed. underneath, you can setup a desk for them to do homework or you can use it as an extra play area.
honestly, if i had known arlo would have liked sleeping on top so much, i’d have maybe considered a loft bed instead but i’m sort of glad to have the extra bed!

arlo’s big boy room
arlo’s room is finally done and i’m soooo happy with how it turned out! i’ve sort of neglected his room ever since we first started making changes from his initial nursery and i felt pangs of guilt when he was so excited about izzy’s nursery and said he wished his room was “painted a color” and “tidy like izzys”!
so in my newfound quest to redo my house forever and ever, i decided that arlo’s room was absolutely the most dire. it was just basically a blank slate that lacked adequate storage for the amount of stuff he has and all it looked like was clutter to me. when we would hang out in there and i would look around i basically just felt anxious and stressed and that’s not the feeling you want to have in your kids room right?first, paint!
so it started with painting EVERYTHING. i wanted to color drench his room in a mix between green and blue because i didn’t want a paint that felt too green and i didn’t want one that felt too blue so i think this color ended up being the perfect in between. it’s a north facing room that gets very little light, so i opted to go lighter than i originally planned. in hindsight now i sort of wish i went a bit darker, for that cozy vibe, but i’m happy with it.
the color is called gray wisp by benjamin moore.
his dream of bunkbeds
arlo begged for bunkbeds for years now, i really can’t explain why! a few of his friends have them so i think it was this novelty that he thought seemed so cool, to be able to choose which bed to sleep in? lol. i really tried to convince him to do a bed with a trundle instead because the room isn’t exactly tall or large and i was worried bunkbeds wouldn’t work in here but he wasn’t having it. bunkbeds seemed to be the #1 priority for him.
i automatically assumed he’d sleep on the bottom bunk and kind of liked the idea that we would finally have additional space for the giant oversized shark stuffies he awkardly slept with, so he could sleep on the bottom and they could sleep on the top. but i was wrong, the first few nights he slept on bottom and then excitedly moved to the top. now he’ll do bottom once in a while but mostly the top. i was worried about him rolling out but we’ve tucked him in under a tight duvet and top sheet and now i’m less worried about it.
had i known that he’d love sleeping on the top bunk, i actually would have loved to get him a loft bed for some extra play space, but it’s nice to have the spare bed just in case for guests. and since writing this, he’s already had his first sleepover!!
also in regards to the full size below the twin size, again i debated this choice a lot – i really like the streamlined look of a twin over twin bunkbed, but i know how much time we’ve spent laying on his bed and i was scared to give that up and felt like a full size bottom bunk would give us the option to lounge with him easier. i’m really glad i did, now i can’t imagine a twin on the bottom!
the canopy was an easy inexpensive solution to his request for curtains surrounding his bunkbed. at first i liked the idea and started brainstorming DIY ideas, but then quickly decided against it – especially because of the full/twin situation. but i do love curtains around a bunkbed, so i decided a canopy would suffice! (i think it’s actually the reason he sleeps on the top bunk because he loves to be all cozy inside it). i wasn’t sure if it would look too young or feminine but the moment we hung it up, it instantly transformed the bunkbeds! it adds such a whimsical vibe and i just love it so much more than i expected!
the lounge area
another choice i’m super happy with is his little lounge corner. i wasn’t sure what i wanted to put in the corner and realized a nugget couch was the best choice for us — he loves playing with them but i never thought we had the space in our house for one, but again we’ve spent so much time laying on his bed i was worried about having seating and i’m so glad i brought in extra! it’s so nice for all of us to have a place to sit and hang out and watch the kids dance and izzy loves it because it’s her size.
i still might get him some fun pillows later, but i was spending so much on the room i tried to use some stuff i already had like these *boring* but soft throw pillows.
i added the little side table we’ve had for years and a fun sticky dartboard to really commit to the lounge concept, and this is where arlo says he’ll “serve drinks” haha
the wall shelving
you might remember arlo originally said he wanted a RED ROOM. well that was not going to be possible for me, but instead i decided to incorporate pops of red throughout the room and i’m shockingly pleased with it! i’m a beige mom (in recovery) so the moment i saw the red spray paint hit the brackets i got reaaaally nervous, but i love the way it looks with the wall color.
and arlo has very timely taste because pops of red are all the rage now.
i knew i wanted to paint the shelves and the trofast desk in the same paint color and i knew i wanted red brackets, but the ones i found and liked were $20 a pop so i decided to DIY it with some brackets from the hardware store (technically hung upside down to most people?) and some candy red spray paint.
i got the supplies to do four shelves but panicked that it would be too many when he hung three — i went back and forth a lot that day but i’m really glad we went four. three may have looked empirically better, but i feel like four makes more of a bold, fun statement. and he has SO MUCH stuff that it would be a shame to have skipped that final shelf. i also like that it kind of plays off the height of the bunkbed – everything goes high in this room now!
i was sad to say goodbye to the circle shelf, but it’s so nice to have the entire width of the wall now because we needed it so badly! these shelves will obviously look cluttered and crazy very soon with all of arlo’s legos, but i’m just happy that we’ll have a pretty background for the clutter now.
i love that the shelves feel like they tell a story of who he is and everything he loves and has loved over the years.
the trofast desk
last year, i had a carpenter build a tabletop for two ikea trofast cabinets for his room and it’s been so helpful for all his toys and legos, and to have a workspace for arlo to build or draw. i had him make a small backsplash because i knew legos would always be falling behind otherwise. he used metal brackets on the undersides of the desk gap to attach to the trofast units, and i should probably do a separate post just on the construction of it!
it looked nice raw wood, but i am SO happy i painted it because i like it so much more now. the paint has already chipped on the tabletop, and the hardware store employees told me there wasn’t much i could do in terms of non toxic, non super shiny protection layers, so for now i have an long old leather table runner i found in the garage on top to protect it.
he’s 6.5 now so at some point he’ll be outgrowing the desk, but if we still want to keep it maybe we could put risers on the bottom to increase the height. for now he fits there fine and loves to sit at his desk.
the other stuff
i made so many changes to the room that i got a little carried away and obsessed. to be honest i’m a little sad the room is finished! but relieved, also very relieved.
- i swapped his very old rug with a nice new soft one we all love to sit on.
- i also swapped out the glass pendant light because i realized it was inches away from the top bunk.
- i kept his cellular blackout shades but i decided to cover them with linen roman shades.
- i blew up one of our favorite arlo drawings and framed it (used an old frame we had laying around and painted it this totally fun, non-beige mom color!)
- i subtly incorporated his love of mario with a mushroom lamp and this cool question box wall art.
- i hung magnet strips so that we could do a rotating art gallery of his latest drawings.
- i got the most fun lego light switch plate covers.
phew! i worked so hard on this room, and luckily it makes both of us so happy!
now some dramatic before and afters, i opted not to clean up for the before photos because this is how it typically looked lol don’t judge me

aarke vs sodastream: which soda maker is better
i guess i consider myself a sparkling water aficionado only because of the amount of sparkling water i consume on a daily basis– which is A LOT. i own almost 10 carbonators that i swap out when empty, and i use the machine a few times a day. i will drink flat water, but i really want a bubble if i can help it lol. we even have a name for it in our house because we refer to it so often! we call it SODEY.
anyway, i used a sodastream for many, manyyyy years and just last year decided to try aarke instead, based solely on the beautiful design of the aarke and having it out on my kitchen counter. i get asked sometimes about which one i prefer, so i thought a proper post was in order to really lay it all out for you if you’re trying to decide between the two machines!
now, some people use these machines to make flavored sparkling waters or even sodas, i don’t do that — i am a purist. not only do i love sparkling water, but i’m also incredibly picky about what types are good and what types aren’t.
we obviously may have different tastes, but for example i like topo chico most. i prefer perrier in a can to a bottle, but i like the bottles of pellegrino if i’m at a restaurant. (and when i order sparkling water in a restaurant i always ask for the cap, for some reason they almost never put it on and let it flatten out while you sit there!!) i like a big full bubble. and i like la croix the least! yuck!
important tips for the best sparkling water
good water quality
the quality and taste of your water plays a massive role in the taste of your carbonated water!
if you’re using regular tap water, it won’t taste good. i make all our sparkling water with our fridge filtered water. we also have a kitchen sink filter, but if i had neither of those i’d probably use a brita to make all my sodey with!use cold water
the colder your water, the more carbonation that the water can hold.
i always fill the bottles with my cold fridge water, but then i also let them chill in my fridge for at least a few hours before carbonating. i find this always makes the biggest difference in terms of taste and quality!
i also never leave the bottles opened or out. i pour my glass and immediately put the bottle back into the fridge.
there’s something about room temp sodey that just grosses me out!
purchase a couple of spare bottles
since your sparkling water needs to be cold, i highly recommend keeping at least one spare bottle in the fridge so you’re able to fill one up and let it chill while you drink the other one. at one point i had four bottles of chilled water in the fridge haha – but i’ve downsized to two (not my choice)
keep your bottles clean
i used to take swigs out of my bottles but once i stopped doing that, the sparkling water tasted cleaner and fresher. plus you won’t have to wash them as often!
sodastream
the pros
- you’ll save tons of money on buying sparkling water
- you’ll reduce your plastic waste
- it can taste incredibly good!
- you can choose the amount of fizz.
- the machines are pretty durable in my experience
- you can also typically exchange them for new models at big box stores if they stop working
- very easy streamlined design so you can typically carbonate your water in just a few seconds
the cons
- the machines are typically made with plastic and don’t look particularly stunning sitting out on your counter
- the machines all have their own unique different noises, some are very loud!
- while the machines are inexpensive, the co2 carbonators are where you spend a lot of money, i used to exchange them at bed bath and beyond and used coupons so it didn’t feel quite so painful, but now i do it at target and it’s a lot of money when you’re replacing a big number of tanks all at once (they do have mods you can buy but that’s not really my style)
sodastream mail-in exchange program prices – $16.99 per carbonator
(get 20% off with this link!)aarke carbonator pro
the pros
- gorgeous design! absolutely the fanciest looking soda maker there is, mine has a powder coated matte finish.
- comes in a variety of beautiful colors to match your kitchen.
- is compatible with (most) sodastream bottles* and carbonators so if you want to switch, you don’t need to invest in new equipment!
- the lever mechanism adds to the charm of the design and feels easier to use than the push mechanism on most sodastream machines
- but also, of course — you’ll save tons of money on buying sparkling water
- you’ll reduce your plastic waste
- it can taste incredibly good!
the cons
- the mechanism for attaching the bottle is a screw in – this sounds tolerable, but after using sodastream for years, it’s actually pretty f**king annoying! you have the line the bottle up just so in order to get it on there straight before screwing the bottle up into the machine.
- it leaks much more often than my sodastream ever did, it’s not every time but the water has sprayed out while carbonating quite often. i’m not sure if there’s something i need to replace, but usually i just go to screw in the carbonator which loosens sometimes
- when the water leaks, it collects in the drip tray, which you don’t notice until it’s time to swap the carbonators and then you spill water everywhere
- the machine is taller than any of my sodastreams, worth mentioning if you have limited height in your kitchen or pantry.
- is a larger splurge than a sodastream machine and while they have their own mail-in exchange program for carbonators, they don’t charge less!
aarke mail-in exchange program prices – $21 per carbonator
*sodastream now has two types of carbonators since they got so many competitors, the standard blue label is the screw in type that’s compatible with my aarke, but now there’s a pink labeled carbonator called “quick connect” which is supposed to be easier to attach to your machine but i’m assuming it’s proprietary!
the verdict
basically it depends on what you want for your soda maker, if you’re into aesthetic and looking for a stylish machine that will look beautiful on your countertop, i vote aarke. if you are not more focused on just something functional and easy to use, i would go for the sodastream.
i wish i could say my aarke functioned as well as my sodastream because it’s so pretty, but between the screw in bottle you have to line up perfectly (which isn’t a huge deal if you’re not making it that often, but i probably make about 2 bottles a day and i definitely don’t find it to be as easy to line up), and the leaking water filling up in the drip tray often (maybe my machine needs to be repaired, but it’s so new that deducts points as well!), i think the large price tag should mean it functions super well too.
sodastream
source bottles (twin pack)
these will work with either machine and they’re my favorite ones.

good looking baby gates
when i was searching for baby gates the first time around, i had suuuch a hard time finding anything remotely decent looking. i finally ended up having one custom-made by our handyman because it was such a focal point in our house i really wanted to like it.
nowadays there are way more modern options out there! you can even buy my baby gate! yeah that’s right, it’s my design, but copied by someone else! i rounded up a few good looking baby gates with different price points for you!
.01 this pressure mount acrylic gate is very sleek ($180)
03. a modern wood and steel gate that works for hallways or stairs ($60)
.04 another nice wood gate that is extra tall and can go in front of stairs ($45)
.05 this is a nice mesh gate for hallways and stairs and i love that it’s retractable ($31)
.07 another really pretty acrylic gate! ($230)
.08 and one more nice wood option that’s also really inexpensive ($37)
what to look for in a baby gate
when choosing a baby gate, just keep in mind where you’re going to put it. certain kinds are designed for hallways, some for stairs, and some can work for both so just make sure you’re getting the right style. also, some are hardware mounted and others can just be pressure mounted.
it’s hard to know how much wear your baby gate is gonna get because you probably won’t know how wild your baby is when you’re choosing one haha. arlo was a very mild mannered lug, while izzy is a rambunctious little wild girl. like if you think your baby will end up hanging on it quite a bit, it’s probably worth mounting it with hardware.
babyproofing your home
besides just getting a baby gate, there are obviously lots of other ways you’ll probably want to make your home safer for a baby. here’s how we babyproofed ours the first time. i included lots of baby proofing products that still look pretty good around the house.
we didn’t really baby proof as much this time because we kept a lot of the things we had intact (like keeping the cabinets under the sink locked, that should just stay locked!) but she is much more wild so we are trying to figure out which cabinets we have to lock that we didn’t before.
more beautiful baby gear
and if you’re looking for more than just baby gates, i put together the ultimate baby registry — i rounded up soooo many baby products that are both pretty AND useful! pretty much everything you would ever possibly need if you’re expecting! i hope it helps!
