    diy turkey feather place cards

In honor of one of my favorite holidays (ok maybe my all time favorite – I love dinner parties and stuffing!), I’m going to create a couple really simple, really cheap ways to create unique items for your thanksgiving table. Hopefully using mostly items you already have at home.

The first diy is inspired by a turkey, I’m not really sure it came out looking turkey-esque, but it’s a quirky little place setting to add some color and fun to the table.

Everything you need you hopefully have already. You obviously don’t need index cards. I have index cards. You can just cut paper.

Loosely draw a small circle with pencil. Around the circle, draw the shapes of your tail feathers. You can obviously do it rough and quick like I did, or you can do it precisely. If you like that sort of thing.

Using a few different colors of your choice, color in each feather. Again, this doesn’t have to be perfect because you’re cutting them out.

I cut around each wing to make sure I knew the other they were in, otherwise I probably would have gotten confused and it would have been a whole thing. You can see I wasn’t too worried about pencil lines and marker mistakes, it kind of adds to the charm in my opinion.

Carve an opening into the top of the cork, I’ve found a knife is way easier to do this with than a razor blade. But you know, howevs.

Now you can start lodging in the feathers one by one. Swap some around, cut a couple more, the possibilities are endless.

Make a little sign with your guest name and tape it onto a toothpick. Lodge the toothpick into the top of the cork until it feels stable.

And now you have a little cuteness on your table! A perfect easy DIY to do with your kids, or if you don’t have kids, your friends can ask what kid you hired to come do your place settings!

  • new york

We felt it was our duty to go visit New York after Sandy visited. And plus we were going to a wedding. The first few days were a tiny bit eerie and hard to get around, but it was a really good trip.

I was worried all the leaves would have blown away in the storm, but they were totally there and fall colored. Doesn’t this look like the Cosby Show street?

A lot of changes had to be made, the wedding venue had to change two days prior but they were somehow able to change it to the waldorf astoria! We couldn’t stay at our hotel because they lost power and phones. And central park was closed for our first few days. We stayed with a family friend and by saturday, things were back to normal and we got to go downtown for our last night!

If you’re in New York, please go eat at Supper in East Village and eat the spaghetti al limone.

My boyfriend and I are completely obsessed with this hotel, Lafayette House. We stayed two years ago in the same room and going back was super romantic and slightly eerie at the same time. But awesome. It’s the best ever.

I am also in love with Momofuku. So we went to every convenient location we could. Shrimp buns, duck buns, pork buns, and crack pie. CRACK PIE. I’M TELLING YOU.

  • happy halloween!

Have fun you guys. Eat lots and lots of candy. I don’t care if you’re a grownup.

We will be, while sharing with children at our door, while watching a double feature of Alien and Aliens.

OH and I just HAPPEN to have a black cat. Halloween? Black cat? Bodhi is a really good sport.

He’s all “ok mom you got your shot can we go cuddle now?

I’m going to New York this week! Well… hopefully. So I’m already getting theme-y with this new column. New York themed. You know? Mona Lisas + Mad Hatters is definitely my favorite NYC song. Enjoy!

  • making this: homemade robocop costume

Okay – now I must warn you. This is some real cosplay shit. You know those people that dress up in costumes for conventions and stuff? I felt like that. And it sucks. I told my boyfriend when we first started dating that I wanted to be Robocop for halloween in passing. Anyway, it came up again this year and since they’re remaking it and the suit looks so stupid and my robocop costume dreams would suddenly become history once the remake was released, he decided to make me my costume. Great boyfriend, huh?

This is me feeling very embarrassed in my amazing costume. We went to an elevator at the Bonaventure Hotel in downtown LA because we thought the setting would be super Robocop-y. People saw me in public during the day and thought I was totally into cosplay.

The whole costume cost about $25 max plus a lot of boyfriend energy.

He made my chest and back piece out of cardboard and attached velcro on the sides and elastic to the shoulders so I could slip it over my head.

My helmet was made from a childs hockey helmet we got at goodwill, he added a leftover cpk frozen pizza box, and after we spray painted, we hot glued old hosiery for my eye piece (my one idea!).

My legs were made from cardboard, and he stuffed napkins into duct tape to make the trim. He later attached buckles so the legs hung from the chest. He attached those aloe juice bottles to the knees.

My arm pieces were made from two ocean spray bottles cut in halves to which he attached elastic.

My feet were my old rain boots that I never wear being so pink with the smaller sized aloe juice bottles duct taped all the way around.

I just wore a black turtleneck, leggings and gloves.

Then we spray painted everything silver. Silver spray paint seriously makes things look instantly robot.

OH and here is me as Robocop.

Next year I’m wearing a dress for halloween.
