    diy constellation coasters

if you read this blog, you’ll notice it’s been a while since i’ve done any DIY crafts. well SORRY i’ve been super busy and i moved and gimme a break! now that i’m a lot more settled in the apartment, i’ll be doing more DIYs again I PROMISE.

i feel like no matter how many coasters are in the room, there will still be one too many drinks. is this a problem for everyone? so i decided we needed a set JUST for our office.

this is a really easy DIY that just requires some patience and a steady hand. and if you have a decent printer at home, all you need to do is find a cute image you want to use and print it out!

i added the gold edges so the coasters would look less like tiles and more store-bought. i think it did the trick!

    DIY CONSTELLATION COASTERS

print outs of your choice of design (i found this vintage celestial print and just used it all four times in different areas)
    white ceramic tiles
    felt stickers for the bottom
    mod podge
    spray shellac
    an xacto blade
    pencil
    foam brush
gold leaf pen or paint pen (optional)

[not pictured] a ruler and an acrylic roller or credit card in case of air bubbles

STEP ONE turn your tile over and with a pencil and blade, cut the shapes out from the print out.

STEP TWO [if you want to] use a marker to color the edges, and do a small border on the top so that the white won’t be visible at all on the top.

STEP THREE do an even coat of mod podge over the whole tile

STEP FOUR quickly and delicately, place your cut out on one end of the tile, lining up the edges. to prevent air bubbles, slowly press down from that end to the other, smoothing the surface as you go.

STEP FIVE go over the surface gently with a credit card or an acrylic roller to ensure the air bubbles are gone.

STEP SIX go over the whole thing with another coat of mod podge. work from the center out and go gently with your brush.

STEP SEVEN take the coasters outside and spray shellac them, 4 times in 30 minute intervals. leave outside for about 24 hours until dry. the more you protect them, the less affected by water damage the coasters will ever be.

STEP EIGHT once they’re dry to the touch and no longer sticky, stick four felt stickers on each corner and essentially turn the coaster into air hockey pucks. you’ll see what i mean when you put the stickers on. it’s fun!

i did another version as a gift with vintage san francisco maps. this coasters would look great with any sort of cool graphic design, and in my opinion you can hardly tell i used the same design four times. right?

    grandmas + what they cook

italian photographer gabriele galimberti set out around the world photographing grandmothers and their signature dishes for his photo series delicatessen with love.

i love this. my grandmother wasn’t the cooking type, but when my mom is a grandma, oh man she’ll do a good job cooking, baking, cooing, and being all grandma-y.

    room reality

ever see a house tour or a room on pinterest and think wtf why can’t i live there? me too. CONSTANTLY. so i’m introducing a new column where i’ll take rooms and break them down in the only way i know how to – the cheapskate way. i’m going to do my best at finding the most equivalent and most affordable elements to the room.

up first – probably one of my favorite rooms ever. this silverlake living room is part of one of my favorite houses designed by commune design.

one i know it’s nowhere as cool and the wrong color, but this chair has that same 70s lounge feel and is only $205!
two rugsville’s beni rug is always on sale, right now the 5×8 is $449
three globe pendant from west elm $99
four a big black and white graphic art print by jesse draxler on society6 $145 for the largest sized framed
five benton brown mahogany end table from overstock $160
six kilim pillows on ebay will are the cheapest i’ve found, these are both under $20 (pillow 1 and pillow 2)
seven urban outfitters cantilever lamp $149
eight jcpenney tie dye throw blanket $45
nine west elm box frame coffee table $349

embossed tin ornaments! made from recycled takeout embossed tin ornaments! made from recycled takeout containers!!

cut the sides to flatten, and then smooth out the texture with a plastic tool or rag (i used a butter spreader and it was perfect)

use a soft surface so you don’t scratch up your table (a sketchbook was perfect) draw your design right onto the tin (you can erase by re-smoothing but the more you do it, the more it’ll get dented up) you can sketch it out with pencil first, or trace right on top. i used an embossing tool but you can also just use a ballpoint pen!

once you’re happy, cut out with scissors, punch a hole and add ribbon! would look so cute with some beads to embellish but i couldn’t find any!

use as ornaments, or decoration around the house, or super special gift tags!! or a whole garland of these on your mantle would look sooo cute!

ps you could also use grocery store lasagna pans or whatever they’re called

should i have made templates for designs? would you guys prefer that?!

after a long weekend of potty training i’m feeling after a long weekend of potty training i’m feeling thankful for everything else in life besides this! some recent moments that brought me joy!
ok new fave holiday hobby unlocked — this is way b ok new fave holiday hobby unlocked — this is way better than potty training. now what else should i draw!!!???

my pinterest is full of embossed tin ornament crafts and i’ve been hoarding tomato paste tubes and takeout containers for a month

i’ll do a proper diy tutorial but all i did was flatten metal takeout containers with a butter spreader, then draw designs with an etching tool (but a ballpoint pen will also work fine!)

punched a hole and added a ribbon! haven’t figured out if there’s a way to dull the edges but they’re not too sharp as long as they’re rounded!
for all the parents of kids who collect every rock for all the parents of kids who collect every rock, seashell, twig, piece of gravel they see — make these sweet ornaments with their treasures — perfectly easy craft for kids to do themselves too 🤍

— i used oven bake @sculpey_official, roll into a ball and smoosh down
— just gently press the shells or rocks in to the clay
— add a tiny wire U to the top to hang
— bake according to package directions
— i used some elastic string to hang easily
