you may remember i’ve already made a leather luggage tag here on the blog — but i decided to revamp. in fact, i’m considering revamping a few older DIYs because honestly — sometimes i run out of ideas, and i never really love old posts.

anyway! i saw these tags months ago on pinterest (they seem to not exist for sale anymore) and i’ve been wanting to create luggage tags in the same style forever. so i finally buckled down and made them! also – now that i’m in the mindset that i’m going to be changing my last name – i decided to incorporate my new name onto the tags as well. yes, my new name will be BOOMER. MOLLY BOOMER. is it crazy sounding?

btw – anyone know how to officially change your last name? it seems like suuuuch a thing.

01. using your rotary cutter, cut the leather down to the size and shape of your choice.

02. wet the leather with a paper towel or submerge in a glass of water. pat dry and tape down one line at a time for a guide for your text.

** i HIGHLY recommend doing a test tag in case you’ve never used the letter stamps before, so you can get used to them. i also recommend lightly pressing each letter in before hammering to make sure you’ve placed it correctly, and all you need to do is two LIGHT TAPS with your hammer per letter.

03. above a working surface (such as scrap wood), do your letter stamping row by row.

04. using your leather punch (or an awl), punch a hole in the top for your elastic. string a double piece of elastic through your hole and tie in a double knot.

  1. Molly, I went through the whole name change process and it is a doozy. I have a comprehensive list of what to do in what order (certain documents are needed first so you can use them to get other documents); let me know if you want me to send it over!

  2. Molly, I love your site and I am happy to be following along. Your post are always inspiring as well as your aesthetic. 🙂 To answer your question about changing your name its a little bit of a process. I did it 5 years ago and I wish someone was there to explain it all to me — so I’m happy to share it with you. You need to start by changing your name on your social security card. After that everything just falls into place and will take about a month to have all your important doc and accounts switched over. You can message me and I’d be happy to walk you through it.

    1. thank you sara! i’m considering getting one of these name change kits so i can just fill it all out and be done with it? but i doubt that it’s that simple!

  3. Love this, as a recent name changer I will be needing new luggage tags myself!

As for the name change process its a long one, as Sara said start with Social Security, DMV, then Passport, Bank, Medical, 401K the list goes on and on it seems. One great tool I found was imamrs.com you can sign up with them and it will create a page that has all the paperwork you need and can just download from there. Its a great way to stay organized and usually you can find a discount code making it pretty cheap. Hope this helps and as a new reader I am lovin’ your blog 🙂

  4. As always, I love this craft! I just pinned it to three of my boards! As soon as I saw this I thought it would be the perfect ‘go to’ wedding gift for a couple’s honeymoon!

  5. Hi Molly,

Quick questions: Where did you buy your leather? I want to give this DIY a shot since you made it so appealing, but it seems like there are a lot of different types of leather out there and I didn’t know which one to go with, or where to buy them. Thanks in advance!
